Portpatrick

Body of Water

Castle Bay, Irish Sea

Description

A very picturesque town with a decent pub on the Southern Upland way. Easy Launch into very clear waters. I have paddled from here 1.5 miles north to Sandeel Bay and stayed on the beach with a box of tinnies and a campfire when I was a teenager! (first beach you come to has caves to explore, second is better for camping). You usually have the beach to yourself as they're difficult to access and often the only roads nearby are private. In high season you do get the people doing the Southern Upland way walking nearby but usually between the youth hostels.

Parking Information

Would park in the South Crescent car park. It does ask no van camping in the car park, but I would paddle to one of the small beaches further north and camp there.

Paddling Information

Not many landing places south, just rugged cliffs but you can see the castle on the cliff tops. Northerly you come across very quiet beaches away from the tourist masses.
